Before you fall for the label, look at how the piece fits, how it is made, and whether it belongs in the life you actually lead.

01. Start with the shoulders.

Try it on over something close to what you would wear underneath. Move your arms, sit down, and fasten the buttons. Look for comfortable shoulders and a front that closes without pulling. A low price does not make an uncomfortable piece a good buy.

02. Turn it inside out.

Inspect the lining, seams, pockets, underarms, and cuffs. Look for holes, stains, loose stitching, and missing buttons. Read the care label and consider the work the piece will need before wearing it.

03. Imagine three outfits.

Try tailored trousers and a simple top for a workday; denim and a knit for a relaxed afternoon; or an easy dress for another proportion. Use pieces you already own as the starting point.

04. Think beyond the purchase price.

Cleaning, repairs, and alterations can change the total cost. If a piece needs tailoring, get an estimate before assuming the change will be simple. Choose the piece you will use, not just the label you recognize.
